Best Horror Movies Released in 2020

The year 2020 has been a fantastic year for horror films. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, many movies avoided theatrically release and opt for video-on-demand release. There is a separate fan base for the horror genre, as the genre has an incredibly complex plot and bone-chilling roots, which is required for fear and pity.

The major studio delayed some anticipated horror films, including A Quiet Place Part II and The Conjuring 3. However, we still have some good content in the genre that the audience can enjoy at home.

The Grudge

Director Nicolas Pesce’s 2020 supernatural horror movie The Grudge is the reboot of the 2004 remake and 2002 original Japanese horror movie Ju-On: The Grudge. It is the fourth installment of The Grudge movie series.

The plot of the movie follows a nurse Fiona Landers. The nurse is disturbed by the events she experiences in her house and leaves the country. She informs one of her co-workers that she is returning to America. Fiona reaches her home in Pennsylvania and reunites with her husband and young daughter. The storyline then unfolds as the plot grows. The movie later becomes a murder mystery of Fiona, which is investigated by a detective Muldoon.

It stars Andrea Riseborough, Demián Bichir, John Cho, Betty Gilpin, Lin Shaye, and Jacki Weaver.

The Grudge was released on 3 January 2020 by Sony Pictures Releasing. However, the movie received negative reviews from critics. It collected a gross of $49.5 million against a budget of $14 million. The horror film has an approval rating of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 123 reviews with an average rating of 4.20/10.

The critics of the San Francisco Chronicle, Mick LaSalle, wrote, “He saw the film in the middle of the day and fell asleep. He added that while watching, he slapped awake himself a few times.”

The Lie

Veena Sud’s psychological horror The Lie is a remake of the 2015 German movie We Monsters. It stars Mireille Enos as Rebecca Logan, Peter Sarsgaard as Jay Logan, Joey King as Kayla Logan, Cas Anvar as Sam Ismali, and Devery Jacobs as Britney Ismali.

The plot of the movie is centered around Kayla, a teenager who ends up killing her friend Brittany by pushing her into the icy water. The news leaves her divorced parents Jay and Rebecca, in a stressfully anxious situation. Both the parents then decide to cover up their daughter’s crime. The movie highlights the extent of morality one could overlook to save loved ones.

The Lie premiered on 13 September 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival and was released by Amazon Studios on 6 October 2020. The movie got mixed reviews and got an approval rating of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 71 reviews with an average rating of 5.10/10. The movie is not as nerve-wracking as the audience thought it would be. In contrast, it does have some alarming moments to see Rebecca and Jay making questionable decisions one after another. The plot seems less believable and artificial.

Underwater

William Eubank’s science fiction horror movie Underwater follows a group of workers at the bottom of the ocean who encounter hostile creatures after a destroying earthquake. It stars Kristen Stewart, Vincent Cassel, Jessica Henwick, John Gallagher Jr., Mamoudou Athie, and T.J. Miller.
